Spark v2.2 Workshop

Do you want to learn more about the newly introduced features in Spark v2.2 and about Spark’s integration with Kafka and Cassandra for streaming pipelines? RSVP here now and save your front row place on November 3, starting 3:30 PM!

About the event

  1. The first part of the workshop will cover Spark SQL with Scala, specifically the limited toy examples emphasized by Spark documentation and tutorials. Spark SQL, used in isolation, can realistically only be used for such didactic use cases – when ingesting real-world datasets, Spark SQL will very quickly show its limitations and therefore some more powerful techniques are needed.
  2. The second part of the workshop will cover the techniques mentioned above, without which Spark SQL is largely ineffective. This section of the workshop will be about sharing lessons learned the hard way, and experience gathered in the trenches of the real world.
  3. The third part of the workshop, titled “Machine Learning By Example”, will cover multiclass classification using SparkML’s Pipeline API with Scala. SparkML is the machine learning module that ships with Spark.
  4. During the remaining time, the trainer will focus on a Scala/Spark Streaming application that ingests data from Apache Kafka (an open-source, high-performance, distributed message queue), performs streaming analytics, then saves the analytics results back into Kafka.

If participants want to dive deeper into high-complexity topics, the trainer will instead focus on live coding ad-hoc demos.

Event agenda

  • 15:30 – 16:00 Welcome
  • 16:00 – 17:00 SQL with Scala
  • 17:00 – 18:00 Spark SQL techniques
  • 18:00 19:00 Machine Learning By Example

How the digital economy is shaping the future. The story of UBER – Fireside chat with Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, Head of EMEA at Uber

On Tuesday, 31 October, we invite you to an insightful discussion on the digital economy and scaling your startup. Our special guest is Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, the Head of EMEA at Uber, who will share best practices in a fireside chat moderated by Cristian Botan, President of The Coalition for the Digital Economy. Fueling Uber’s growth in Europe since 2012, Pierre has experienced first hand what it takes to scale a successful global business and will share with you the lessons he learned along the way. RSVP here and save your front row seat!

About the speaker

Pierre heads Uber’s operations across Europe, Middle East and Africa overseeing the company’s growing business across 45 countries and over 120 cities. Spending some years at Goldman Sachs, becoming an entrepreneur at the age 27 and harnessing a big urge to build something, Pierre joined Uber’s first international city as General Manager for France in 2012. As one of the earliest members of the team and with a conviction of the need to offer better transport options, he mass-scaled Uber’s service across Europe before taking the challenge to the wider region.

Pierre first developed his passion for numbers during school, coding and building websites with friends, after which he further developed his skills at the Ecole Centrale de Paris before heading to New York to study Financial Engineering at Columbia University.

He is a French citizen based in Amsterdam and married since this year.

Uber’s mission is to make transportation as reliable as running water — everywhere, for everyone.  We started in 2009 to solve a simple problem – how do you get a ride at the touch of a button? Six years and over a billion trips later, we’ve started tackling an even greater challenge: reducing congestion and pollution in our cities by getting more people into fewer cars.

Cristian Botan, President of The Coalition for Digital Economy

Botan is a digital entrepreneur and activist for transparency in public administration, with 5 years experience working as an advisor for the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of Romania, during three different cabinets. His appointment within the Government was a result of his initiative to publish all public administration vacancies in an unique online portal (PublicJob.ro), in order to bring about transparency and combat favoritism and nepotism in the public sector. As of September 2017, he is the President of the Coalition for Digital Economy.

The Coalition for Digital Economy

The Coalition for Digital Economy was established in 2017 with the purpose of bringing together stakeholders who support digital innovation and believe in its positive impact, both for citizens and for states as a whole. The Coalition aims to be a catalyst of the digitization of the Romanian economy and to advocate for forward looking policies and programs that encourage digital services, for a more competitive Romania.
