April BucharestJS Meetup

Join us to get a solid introduction into DApps, explore some unconventional ways of working with React and be the first to hear the BucharestJS surprise news. RSVP here to save your front row spot on April 24, starting 18:30!

About the event

Loredana Bourceanu is currently Software Lead at Modex, a blockchain company. In this role, she is responsible with coordinating the technical team, as well as maintaining an efficient liaison with the other departments involved in the software development process. A professional focused on delivering the best results, Loredana has more than 8 years experience in software development (embedded systems, payments and blockchain) as a developer.

We live in a world of “the conventional”. Go online and research React, and most articles, guides, tutorials and handbooks you will find will contain some variant of the classic React class components and Redux, with small changes, here and there. Today, we will be taking a dive into the unconventional, to explore a few of the other (arguably better) options out there, by working with React in a functional manner, using React Hooks, GraphQL, and Observables.

Event agenda

  • 18:30 – 19:00 Welcome
  • 19:00 – 19:15 Intro notes
  • 19:15 – 20:00 Introducing DApps with Loredana Bourceanu
  • 20:00 20:30 Unconventional React by Sabin Marcu – Software Engineer at R/GA

What’s in it for you?

During the evening, the Blockchain Romania community’s speaker will try to give you some answers to the following questions:

  • Are crypto-currencies the money of the future?
  • Are they, in report with money, analogous to what TCP/IP was for the Internet?
  • What makes a piece of paper valuable just because it has a central bank’s governor signature?
  • What makes Bitcoin different from other coins?
  • Are any attributes (such as decentralization) that make a crypto-currency more valuable?

About the speaker

Tudor Smirna is the director of Ludwig von Mises Institute Romania. He has studied the connection between banks and crypto-currencies (also teaches about “Money, Banks and Bitcoin”) and has a Ph.D. from Academy of Economic Studies (where he’s also an Assistant Professor).

Blockchain in a Legal context

Join us for in a depth talk about the legal framework behind smart contracts. RSVP here to save your front row spot on March 15, starting 18:30!

About the event

Are smart contracts smart enough to function by themselves or is there human intervention required? Can you appeal a decision taken by a smart contract? How does the inherent immutability aspect of blockchain interfere with provisions of existing laws (e.g. right to be forgotten)? Does employing this type of new technologies create liability in the real world? All these and more are aspects we’ll try to debate in another panel Q&A with people coming from legal backgrounds, but having a special interest around blockchain and who can foresee aspects that will need clarification (or, maybe, would be incompatible) when the current legal system is being “translated” in smart-contract lingo.

About the speakers

The panel will be moderated by John Carvalho (one of the panelists in the previous edition) and panelists will be Diana Stetiu, Alexandru Gosa and Paul Babus.

Diana is a senior associate at Bulboaca & Asociatii having significant experience in advising banks, private equity funds, asset management companies, payment institutions and businesses that are interested in electronic payments and e-money. Diana is currently involved in fintech projects, including blockchain based services and crypto-currency exchanges platforms. Diana is an active member of non-profit organizations promoting innovation in technology. She has particular interests in open source projects and DLT.

Alex is a lawyer keen on blockchain and crypto-assets and their relationship with law and regulation. He is part of the New and Emerging Technologies and the Dispute Resolution teams at Peli Filip.

Graduating both Law and Computer Science, Paul is the lead IP expert of the Digital 2 Law network in Romania, involved in the technology sector, combining his dual expertise to provide legal assistance in all aspects of data protection, intellectual property, emerging technologies, internet law, corporate and commercial, advertising and products.
