TechHubTuesday Demo Night - July 12, 2011

By Miguel Garcia
TechHub's Tuesday Demo Night is tonight starting at 6:30pm. As always we'll be bringing you the latest in tech and startups, you can find tickets here. We have an exciting line-up of technology entrepreneurs, from around the web industry, ready to present their products and share their expertise with you. For July we're theming around tools for developers and startups. Are you working on something that can make someone else's new product faster/better/generally more amazing? Then we want to see it! You'll also have a great opportunity to network with others working on similar projects. You're bound to find something valuable for your own initatives. Crisps and drinks will be available.

Here is the demo list:

Ripple Software
My software is a high performance web database indexing and event publishing application for the back end to web sites. My primary targets are trading, gaming and e-commerce web applications. I also see a big market for CMS applications that need quality search. For more information check out my blog

Scalarium
Scalarium.com is a managment solution of clusters on Amazon EC2. We automate complex setups with Chef and run some pretty big sites. For more information see our blog

ClickSlide
We prdouce a website that can be viewed on any device with a web browser. For an additional fee, this software can also be extended into Mobile Apps at the click of a button. This is not just for the iPhone, but for Smartphone platforms such as Android, Windows Phone, Nokia, Blackberry, HTC, Samsung (Bada) and WAP enabled phones. The product has been built using sophisticated web-based software developed solely by Clickslide Ltd. It is designed for two very different markets: for products, organisations or individuals wanting a low-cost voice on the web; and for developers looking for a quicker, simpler way to build software at a lowercost. If you can produce software by which anyone can deliver a variety of services across multiple platforms, it becomes a necessary tool for the future of digital branding. The fact that it is easy to use and inexpensive is a plus. How much less expensive 70-90%.

INFER
The INFER Static Analyzer represents the next step forward in software prdouctivitiy and quality assurance. INFER is a software tool which is able to analyze thrid party software and automatically identify critical errors. INFER is based on rigorous mathematical principles. It is the result of several years of research in software analysis carried out at the university of London. INFER is now used to check for erros in critical software like avionics code at Airbus.

Scrumburner
Scrum project-managment software makes the process idiot proof- native code that works seamlessly across iPad, iPhone, android, and desktops. We're a startup, and we use our tool in house for our own projects, but it's alpha at the moment- beta coming this autumn/winter. The Alpha signup form is available here. Check our redglassesapps website as well.

Logentries
We provide log managment as a service. It automatically gathers, analyses, visualises and stores your log date from across your IT infrastructure in real time. It gives you immediate access to your log data in a single dashboard and is targeted at developers/testers/admins of IT and software systems where log data can give very detailed insight into what is happening in the system as it runs. Logentries can (1) help prevent system crashes and (2) can reduce the time spent resolving system issues. For more details check out our blog

So make sure to visit TechHub tonight, July 12 @ 6:30pm, to hear more from our demo attendees and for a great opportunity to network with other entrepreneurs. For more information visit our event page: TechHub Events

TechHub's First Birthday

By Miguel Garcia
TechHub is tonight celebrating our 1st birthday and we have a lot to be excited about!

For many startups surviving the one year mark is a feat in itself, let alone going beyond it, but TechHub has been thriving and expanding since the day we launched and we're still flying high.

"We're excited to be celebrating our first birthday at TechHub. It's been a whirlwind year and it's really a testament to the support of the tech community, our members, sponsors and friends that we've had such a fantastic launch year" says Elizabeth Varley, Co-founder & CEO.

TechHub has seen such an increase in membership that space at its current home is running out. Building new spaces to accommodate our growth has not been enough to address the amazing number of new members and residents that have decided to join our family. We couldn't be happier with the effects, leading us to move to larger new premises before the end of 2011. As we go forward into our second year we will be revealing further exciting news for the next chapter of TechHub.

None of this would be possible without the support of our wonderful community. Our first birthday celebrates not only TechHub but all those who have contributed to our great success. As well as our awesome members and supporters, a big thank you goes to our major sponsors: Pearson, Google and BlueVia - you help make this possible.

We also couldn't put on such great shindigs without our events sponsors, so we'd like to thank our lovely birthday sponsors, UK2.netDorsey & Whitney and Viadeo, for helping make this a memorable evening.

"Dorsey is an international firm, representing technology startups throughout their lifecycle, from incorporation, through financing to an acquisition or IPO. Our office is just along the road from TechHub and we have been involved since the early days. We are delighted to be sponsoring TechHub's first birthday party- it is a terrific milestone and one that should be celebrated in grand style!" says Frances Doherty, Partner.

UK2's MD Martin Barker said, “
UK2 were a start-up not so long ago. We launched in 1998 and have experienced the trials and tribulations that comes from building a successful business. Since then we have grown into a leading UK web host, including launching a number of other successful startups within our group. We want to offer startups the support and tools they need to successfully launch and manage their websites, and we're looking forward to celebrating with the TechHub startups tonight."

So make sure to bring your best birthday spirit! We look forward to having you blow out the candles with us.

Thank you to:

TechHub gets a namecheck from Google's Chairman, Eric Schmidt

By Tech Hubber

TechHub was honoured to be mentioned by Google's Chairman,  Eric Schmidt, in an article in London's Evening Standard Newspaper last week. He's the relevant extract:

"We are investing in the East London technology project, and will be working with two inspirational organisations, TechHub and Seedcamp, which are already leading lights in London's start-up community."

Google was an early sponsor and champion of what TechHub was trying to do in London.

Hire a contractor free with the TechHub secondment programme

By Elizabeth Varley
Looking for some expert help for your cash-strapped startup? Could you use a developer for two months, or an operations person a day a week?

At TechHub, we're putting a programme in place where corporates can offer their staff on secondment to tech startups. It might be that the corporate would like to contribute to the startup community via their talented staff, offer an opportunity to their staff to try new things, or if they're facing redundancies and want to help staff on their way to joining a startup or beginning their own as an entrepreneur.

We have one such project that we're planning with a large mobile company at the moment, and while the project is still in planning, it's likely  they'll have some people across development, engineering, product management, ops and some support functions such as HR avalable to startups to temporarily take on board.

We want to get an idea of which companies need help and in which areas, and whether or not there's the possibility it could turn into a role afterwards (this isn't a definite requirement, but we do want to know if it's a possibility).

This is being offered to TechHub Members first, and potentially to other tech startups in the Shoreditch area.

If you're interested please email Elizabeth [@] Techhub.com:
  • A 100-word description of your company and product. Include the size of your company/roles in the current team and how long it's been running.
  • A 100-word brief outline of the project/area you'd need help with
  • A list of the skills a person would need in order to be involved
  • Whether you'd need someone full time for a few months, or if a day/few days a week would also work
  • Please note if any of the roles a person or people would be filling is likely to turn into a permanent or longer-term contract role (paid) with your company
Once the programme is in place, we'll be arranging a speed-dating/meet & greet evening for potential employees to meet with the startups.

If you're a large employer and you'd be interested in joining this programme at TechHub, please get in touch with Elizabeth at TechHub.com for more details of how to get involved.

TechHubTuesday Demo Night - June14,2011

By Miguel Garcia

In keeping with the awesome tradition here at TechHub of bringing you the latest developments in the tech industry, we'll be having our next demo night tomorrow night at 6:30pm, tickets here. We have an exciting line-up of technology entrepreneurs, from around the web industry, ready to present their products and share their expertise with you. From next generation cloud-based finance apps to innovative educational tools for children with learning difficulties, we're sure you're bound to find something valuable for your own initiatives.

Here is the demo list:

Fund Apps, Rapptr

FundApps provides a new generation in financial services software. We believe 3+ month implementations, expensive licenses and complicated software should be a thing of the past. So called "Apps" have revolutionised the software industry, leading to one click installations, close to zero configuration and a usability level which is so high that user manuals are unnecessary. Likewise, FundApps offers the same in easy-to-implement and easy-to-use software for the fund industry, while still delivering more advanced functionality than any of its peers. These solutions are hosted using Cloud technology, enabling you to save on your IT costs and concentrate on your core business.

Rapptr is a next generation cloud-based compliance monitoring & reporting solution. It provides full UCITS IV monitoring as well as major shareholding reporting, both pre-trade & post trade.

INSITEO
INSITEO is the world's only provider of indoor GPS and high-value location based services compatible with most mobile phones. Our indoor positioning is at < 1 m at best and reliable. Our solutions are multidisciplinary: indoor wayfinding, micro-targeted ads, continuous data creation and high-conversion marketing. We have great references, mobile partners, won awards and are currently among the top 100 Red Herring startup candidates.

MyChoicePad
MyChoicePad is an educational Makaton iPad app for children and adults with learning or communication difficulties. It uses (based on BSL), symbols and speech to enable choice, empowerment and independence. 1 in 10 children in the UK have a communication problem when they enter primary school and current communication aids cost between £2k and £10k making them unaffordable for many. MyChoicePad has been built in collaboration with the Makaton Charity whose Patron is Justin Fletcher aka Mr Tumble for all those with kids under 5! Mr Tumble is a character in the worldwide award winning CBeebies programme- Something special

Tribesports
Tribesports is a sports social network that motivates and encourages its users to do more in sports. Our cross platform service allows users to build a complete catalogue of their sports achievements, record and share their current activity, join tribes of people with common sports interests and take on challenges to keep them active and improving in their chosen sports. Currently in private beta, but we're already seeing great traction.

Ekko
Ekko is a new kind of chat service, centred around where you're at and what you like talking about. Shout whatever is on your mind- a message, photo, video or link and start chatting right away! Ekko is mostly about fun. It's about finding out what people are talking about at the places you like. Look around.  You don't have to say anything or sign up to see what's going on around places. You can play around with the filter and explore the ekkos' in your neighbourhood, or any other place you feel like exploring. Discover what people are talking about right now.

 Dpcloud
dpcloud is a web application for creating and publishing live video presentations with synchronised PowerPoints, Facebook Photo Albums, Webpages & Twitter#. Easy to use, integrate, globally scalable, and cost effective, dpcloud will change the way you make live video presentations forever.

 kliqed
Meet-ups more easily, more often, more fun! Kliqed is a unique app that helps busy people meet with their friends by taking into account their time availability. It works in the background sending kliqs that suggest times when friends will be free to meet. You take 3 simple steps to get Kliqed working: Find and invite friends, tell Kliqed how often you aim to meet with this friend. No one else but you sees this. Kliqed assumes regular social times (which you can change). Kliqed scans your calendar to check that you will be free during these times and not occupied with other appointments. You can also use one offs to tell Kliqed about one off occasions that you will be free. And that's it! Accepted kliqs are automatically saved in your calendar.

So make sure to visit TechHub tomorrow, June 14 @ 6:30pm, to hear more from our demo attendees and for a great opportunity to network with other entrepreneurs and startup gurus. For more information visit our event page: TechHub Events

TechHub Member Blog: Neil Gallagher from Caped Koala

By Elizabeth Varley
Welcome to a new feature on the TechHub blog - Member Posts. We're selecting a TechHub Member each week to tell you a bit about their company and product, and to talk about some of the issues they're facing or interesting industry news that's caught their eye.

First up, is Neil from Caped Koala Studios...

photo (3).jpg
Neil & some of the Caped Koala guys in their previous digs before they moved to TechHub.

I’m Neil, CEO of Caped Koala Studios creators of educational virtual world Pora Ora.

We’ve been resident at TechHub since Oct 2010 and you can see from the photo why we wanted to move here and away from the serviced office at Regus – paying £950 for a tiny desk and 1Mb/second internet connection does not compare to the more flexible approach at TechHub and their 100 Mb/second connection.

Our product Pora Ora is a 3D virtual world where primary school children can learn, play and interact online. All content on the platform is mapped directly to the national curriculum with a ‘parents’ portal, providing parents and teachers with personalised progression reports.

Our aim is to foster a love of learning in young children, by engaging them in fun, social and educational content. The game offers children incentives including in-game currency, character progression and the ability to unlock new levels, enabling them to improve key skills at a level tailored to their personal ability.

Since moving to TechHub we have benefitted enormously from the  wide range of networking opportunities which have contributed directly to a number successes, namely:

Won the IC digital innovation contest
    Runners-up at geek n rolla
Listed in the top-100 European startups in the Telegraph

We are now working actively testing our next release of Pora Ora which will be available to the public by close of play this week. This has many new exciting features that will kick-start the Pora Ora rollout. We have also engaged the BallouPR guys who sit behind us at TechHub and they will be running a number of events for us in the coming weeks so watch the space...

We have offices in London, Cork (Ireland) and Poznan (Poland) and, in total, employ 16 hard-working and creative individuals who want to put the fun back into learning!

In terms of recent news that's caught our eyes: we're seeing active increased interest in the MMO gaming space with the recent news of Tiny Speck’s latest  $10.7m round.

This really hammers home the message that there is significantly more money available on the West Coast US that Europe for early stage pre revenue companies.

If you'd like to chat, you can find us on twitter:
