Jobs at TechHub: Events Manager
By Elizabeth VarleyWe're very excited to announce an opportunity at TechHub: we're looking for an events superstar!
Would you like to be part of a tech startup phenomenon? TechHub launched sixteen months ago and in that short time has had a huge amount of media coverage and interest from the tech startup community. We're committed to making a difference to tech startups in London and beyond, and have some very exciting announcements on the horizon about enhanced space in London and new international locations.
With so many great events already going on at TechHub London, exciting new plans and more and more companies and organisations wanting to run events with us, we now need someone dedicated to making sure every single one is a smash.
This is a great opportunity for someone with solid events experience, who wants to take it to the next level and grow with TechHub. If you're successful, speedy advancement is definitely an option - you could end up overseeing all UK events for TechHub, or getting involved in international TechHubs and ending up as global events director or setting up and managing a TechHub in another city. There are huge possibilities!
The role:
- Coordinating and managing all events at TechHub London.
- Logistics: you'll respond to enquiries, manage quoting, book dates, plan and order catering and staff, and any additional equipment or furniture requirements.
- Promotion: you'll create event registration pages, manage online event promotion (including writing the event copy and posting it to various websites), and create relationships with organisations to promote relevant events to their network.
- Event management: you'll ensure smooth running of the event on the day, manage our volunteer event assistants and recruit more, welcome guests, manage clear-up and lock up after the event.
- Sponsorship: you'll manage relationships with sponsors, ensuring their needs are met. Ideally you'll have some experience with creating sponsorship packages and selling to sponsors - though in this role it's rarely cold-calling as you'll have interested contacts passed through to you for follow-up.
This is a full time role - likely hours will be 40 hours a week, spread out over 4-5 days and evenings per week and you *must* be able to work evenings at least a few evenings a week (usually Tuesday-Thursday). We anticipate it will begin as a freelance role and then move to a permanent role if all is going well.
This role will involve evening work - as our
evening events usually run 6.30-9.30pm, on event days you may
need to work until 10pm to oversee the event, so flexible
availability is a must. Please do not apply for the role if you
are available only during the day.
You may have had previous roles as an event manager, event
assistant or event coordinator, or you might have organised or
managed events as part of another role, such as marketing, office
management or PA work. We're flexible on your background but need
someone who can hit the ground running and quickly become part of
our fun, friendly and hard-working team.
You are:
- Super organised - you just can't rest until every last detail is planned and prepared, and you know how to anticipate everything and have plans in place to deal with the unexpected.
- Agile in dealing with change - we sometimes need to take advantage of last-minute opportunities, such as an international speaker being available at very short notice. In a small company, flexibility is key - we need someone who won't freak out if they need to arrange a same-week event.
- Confident and well-spoken - you'll become the face of TechHub events, welcoming attendees and guests at the beginning of each event, and will need to be able to speak to people at the event if they have questions or want to know more about TechHub.
- Reliable - we need to know that you'll be there when you say you will, and get done what you say you'll get done. We're a small team and this is absolutely essential.
- An excellent writer of English - there will be a lot of emails and copy to be written as part of the role to answer queries, make arrangements and promote events, so great language skills are very important.
- Keen to be part of a small and growing team - this isn't a corporate role, so the need to muck in and get your hands dirty is balanced with great opportunities for responsibility and advancement.
- Strategically-minded - you need to be able to understand how events fit into the wider scope of TechHub, how to make sure they're doing what we need them to do, and how to ensure they're making money without compromising our objectives.
- Interested in the technology and web industry - you get excited about the possibilities for people to create amazing new tools, products and companies and want to help bring these people together to learn, network and take advantage of opportunities.
So, if this sounds like you, and you have an engaging, enthusiastic personality, get in touch with Elizabeth Varley at elizabeth AT techhub.com with:
- Your CV
- TechHub Events Superstar in the subject line
- A brief overview of your relevant experience and skills
- Details of your availability - when you could start, hours you could commit to
- The hourly or daily rate you'd expect as a freelancer, and the annual salary level you'd seek in a permanent role - do bear in mind that as a small company, we won't be offering corporate-level salaries
- A line or two about why we should specifically choose you
Be professional but with personality - don't write like a corporate drone, let your real self shine through your email.
Please get in touch asap.
Facebook Apps Made Easy - Wednesday @TechHub
By Elizabeth VarleyFacebook recently announced a number of changes to make working with "Social Graph" and "Open Graph" easier than ever. But what does that mean when attracting customers to engage with your product or service?
Led by Glenn Gillen from Heroku, the cloud application platform now partnering with Facebook, this event will explain “Open Graph” and how it allows more relevant sharing of custom content on Facebook. It will demonstrate how easily a company can use these new APIs to maximum effect, by building (live!) an example website that takes advantage of them.
The event will walk you through the new app creation interface, demonstrating how quickly and easily it deploys an example app in one of 4 languages. You can see how Heroku will allow you to extend functionality and scale your app in just seconds.
Acquiring “Open Graph” know-how will help to further encourage customer engagement with your brand, raise conversion rates, and build brand loyalty - say goodbye to begging your customers to ‘like’ something!
All this will be done LIVE, so bring your laptops and iPads because you’ll be able to get involved in the action!
TechHubTuesday Demo Night - Internet Week Europe Special
By Miguel GarciaMany TechHubbers and regulars are familiar with Demo Night at TechHub. After all, we've had quite a few since our opening and have witnessed some amazing companies and individuals that are transforming the London tech scene, and beyond, with their products.
With Internet Week Europe taking place the same week, we've decided to give our usual Demo Night a European twist. This means we'll be featuring some amazing companies proudly based in Europe (two from Latvia and one from Germany, plus a US company). The usual things that make Demo Night great such as networking, food, and drinks will all be available.
Here are some of the brilliant companies participating:

Recently winning Series B funding in the amount of $10 million dollars madvertise are finding themselves in the greatest transition for a startup, moving towards a full fledged business! The ladies at madvertise are beloved members of TechHub and an exciting and spirited bunch who add an optimistic flair to everything they do. Women entrepreneurs, this one is for you! A company that knows how to reap the rewards of the mobile web movement is surely set to take over the continent and perhaps even more!

Think global networking and social media are synonymous with being online? Meet the folks at LinkOut, a London startup that wants to make the world of online networking work offline. With many leading techies claiming that LinkOut is a tool that will help the UK digital economy flourish and has the potential to become the ultimate networking tool it's easy to see why such a group would be included in our Demo Night.

Apps aren't cool unless they can communicate. That's why the people at Twilio specialise in providing infrastructure APIs for businesses to build scalable, reliable voice and text messaging apps. Nothing like upgrading the communicative power of your business.

In an industry that has changed little for generations cafes, bars and restaurants might be hit with a surprise soon. Will it be game changing? Find out with Amooz! Going to their website won't reveal much, as they're working in stealth mode, so don't miss the unveiling at demo night!

The new way to rent a car. So what's new about it? Rentmama gives you more tools to compare competitors and customise your experience just the way you want it. Surely building and running a startup requires some travel, so why not come and check out an easy way to get some sweet wheels while saving on some great deals.

A healthy dose of information in the 21st century no longer needs to come from a hospital, clinic or even from a doctor visit. The folks at healthloop are creating the best dose for our new social world. With patient engagement and recovery lacking in many countries healthloop is creating a new way for patients to stay better informed and connected with their doctors.

With Partcl.com, developers can concentrate on implementation of their ideas rather than on searching for data sources, building infrastructure and writing an advanced code. Also Partcl.com provides infrastructure with guaranteed infinite scalability and flawless performance. They realtime the web!
As you can see these companies are wide ranging and will provide something for everyone. Be there at the beginning of their great journeys all in one place...

PlayMob is Revolutionizing Giving Through Ethical Games
By Miguel Garcia
The online gaming world is
explosive. In just the last decade the number of gamers around
the world has grown exponentially to include almost all ages and
a penetration above 50%. In most households in the developed
world the average gamer is now in her mid-thirties!
By most standards, games were never considered to be much more than entertainment tools, a way for kids to spend a few hours mesmerized in front of screens. Just like everything else in technology this has changed in more ways than any game developers could have imagined.
PlayMob is just the type of company that is turning gaming on its head. Every year billions of dollars are spent on virtual goods, basically nothing more than colourful pixels and bytes. Most people would be surprised that someone could spend real money for non-existent things, but that’s not the point. The main question is how can this money be put to good use.
PlayMob answers this question by helping charities fundraise
through games that link virtual goods to good causes. PlayMob
Founder, Jude Ower, was interested in not only providing
technology that improves games but helping games do good. The
technology that is helping make all this possible is GiverBoard,
which helps charities raise money and exposure for free. Further
influence from GiverBoard is helping capture a whole new audience
and improving engagement with existing
players.
The small startup has been able to secure £140k in funding which
is going towards further development. A second round of funding
has been opened and will help scale the business in the next
year. PlayMob's long-term strategy is to become the company that
enables giving across all game platforms but it also wants to
work with non-game partners to transform simple transactions into
tools for giving. The goal is not to change the behaviour of
people but to augment existing services to have a positive social
impact.
We’re very proud to have
PlayMob’s team working at TechHub. Way
to go ladies and bon voyage in your journey to transform
giving!
Introducing... Victoria Redfern, TechHub Events Assistant
By Victoria Redfern
Hi everyone!
My name is Victoria and I will be around & about at TechHub, assisting Liam with putting on the wonderful events that take place here! You'll be able to catch me on a Wednesday & Thursday each week and I also help out at evening events, too.
I'm currently studying for my final year of my Music Business degree at The Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, having spent my first year of study up north in Manchester. My degree is very entrepreneurial-focused, which as you can imagine in these changing times for the music industry aligns itself very well with the tech community, too. My studies have allowed for me to gain a lot of valuable experience within the events field whilst also keeping me aware of new technology. I believe that working at TechHub will complement my studies and aspirations greatly - there is so much to learn from being immersed in an environment as great as this.
Before entering full time education as a 'mature student', I spent a number of years working as a PA and becoming involved with event organisation and administration. I originally hail from Leicestershire in the East Midlands, which I believe classes me as a 'Northerner' down in these parts!
In my spare time I like to read up on my favourite blogs, attend gigs, listen to lots of music and indulge in my favourite activity of making lots and lots of cupcakes! Please do not hestitate to come and say hello or give me a shout if you require any details for any of the future events taking place at TechHub!

It will be hosted by Mike Butcher, editor of TechCrunch Europe (and TechHub co-founder), at the Carbon Bar in London's West End. So don't miss out and make sure to sign up for a chance to be among the startup leaders of Europe.

Marketing day at TechHub - Wednesday 5th Oct
By Liam MooreThe day kicks off with a special (and now fully booked!) 'mini PR work shops' with Ubiquity Comms aimed at helping you understand how to generate media coverage, online buzz and awareness of your product or company on a shoestring.
Next up, TechHub presents Theory of Launch - A marketing workshop for tech startups and entrepreneurs with digital agency Gather & Throw. In this exciting workshop Charlotte Hogg, MD of advertising agency, Gather and Throw, will introduce you to, and help you understand and apply the company’s ‘Theory of Launch’; a set of steps designed to successfully launch and accelerate technology based startups.
In the evening, we are delighted to welcome back Obi Felten, Director of Consumer Marketing for EMEA, Google to share her considerable experience and insight. Focusing on themes and ideas to help Start-ups and Entrepreneurs get maximum marketing value from limited resources Obi will be doing a 10-15 minute talk before opening the floor to 45-50 mins of questions (which you can submit in advance here.)
And finally, with an abundance of start-ups vying for attention and limited sources of funding available how do you make yourself stand out from the crowd and capture the imagination of those whose opinion (and cash!) really matters? On Thursday 6th Oct the workshop Pitch Perfect will provide you with skills designed to help you promote your product, idea or service to investors and consumers.
