Seeking an on-site VA for TechHub

By Elizabeth Varley
Are you a VA or someone who offers secretarial/assistant services who'd like to work with clients in the tech industry and start-ups? We'd like to create a barter relationship with someone looking for (free) desk space from which to run their VA business who'd be interested in being based at TechHub London in Shoreditch/Old St, and in return providing some reception cover during our host's lunch breaks, a few other bits and bobs and offering well-priced VA services to TechHub members.

TechHub plotting and planning...

By Elizabeth Varley

Had a great final planning meeting with the designers and builders about the TechHub interior. We're not doing loads to the space (putting in some meeting rooms, getting rid of the old ceiling tiles and a few other things), so that we can get up and running asap and work's about to start - very exciting!

Watching Steve, Alice and Nick peering above the tiles to plan out the cabling, I couldn't resist taking a picture!

Seeking interns to help TechHub with member benefits package & local guide

By Elizabeth Varley
The lovely Alex is doing a great job as a TechHub intern, but we have so much going on, we're looking for another!

This will be involved in specific projects: to help us build out the additional member benefits that TechHub members can enjoy, and help in compiling a special TechHub guide to the local area.

TechHub member benefits project
  • Co-ordinating and collating all the great offers we get for free and discounted products and services
  • Finding out more information about what's on offer and what the benefits are
  • Helping to make decisions about which offers to accept
  • Proactively contacting companies who's products or services we'd like to offer to members
  • Visiting businesses local to TechHub to help arrange discounted services (like hotels, restaurants, taxi firms etc)

We've started this process, and are looking for someone motivated, organised, outgoing and with great communication skills to get involved.

TechHub local guide project

  • Where can you get the best coffee, breakfast, selection of beers?
  • Which websites will tell you about very local cinema listings and gigs?
  • How long does it take to walk to each station, bus stop, hotel?
  • Where's the closest cash machine, mobile top-up, post office?
  • you get the idea...

As TechHub's members will come from all over, we want to make sure that when they arrive they can find all the info they might need and how to get where they need to go right from TechHub's front door.

If you're good at research, with initiative and writing skills this would be an interesting project for you to get involved with.

What can you learn from interning with TechHub:

  • How to think about your audience and what they need
  • How to measure options against a set of criteria
  • Time-management skills
  • Planning skills
  • Extra research, writing and editing skills
  • How to craft and present a proposal
  • You can develop some skills in project management too if that's something you're interested in
  • You'll also gain an insight into running a business from working alongside a busy entrepreneur, and some useful contacts.
You can intern partly from home, partly in central London (Covent Garden & Old St),  and if you happen to know Old St/Shoreditch like the back of your hand, so much the better!

You'll be learning mostly from Elizabeth Varley director of TechHub (and former editorial director), and Alex Good who's gained some great experience and knows a thing or two about the workings of the business.

You can be involved with one or both of the above projects depending on your time and skills, and we anticipate the duration of your internship will be around 2-4 weeks. We'd love it if you could start immediately, and could intern with us full time, but let's talk about dates and days.

TechHub announces Pearson as first founding sponsor

By Elizabeth Varley

We're delighted that TechHub has signed Pearson, the global education and media company, as its first founding sponsor.

Pearson’s role as a TechHub founding sponsor partner shows that a large company with a leadership role in digital publishing and digital education values collaboration with the innovative entrepreneur community.

In Pearson's announcement director of digital product and consumer technology Juan Lopez-Valcarcel said “Digital products and services already comprise about a third of Pearson’s global revenues and we are always looking at new ways of partnering with innovative start-ups and reaching top tech talent. We are excited about being TechHub’s first founding sponsor and look forward to engaging with what promises to be a vibrant community of tech entrepreneurs.”

Right now, Pearson has teams worldwide exploring the digital frontiers of its businesses – education, consumer publishing at Penguin and business information at the Financial Times Group.

All these businesses will benefit from the collaborative environment that TechHub plans to provide. The partnership with TechHub is also a natural fit with other Pearson digital initiatives including an innovation fund that helps turn exciting ideas into new products and services.

TechHub is all about relationships and collaboration in technology, innovation and supporting tech start-ups, so as you can tell we’re pretty excited about Pearson’s involvement.
